The World Cup will add R38bn to SA's economy - more or less the amount spent to host the tournament, says Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

1 million tourists enter SA

The number of foreign visitors entering South Africa during the FIFA World Cup period has now risen to one million, the home affairs department said on Sunday.

"This figure is expected to rise further as the World Cup enters the semi-finals and the final phases of the tournament

The above is quoted from the news but it was also said this 1 million is 250000 more than for the corresponding month of June 2009. Meaning only an additional 250000 visitors. This 250000 came in through all border posts, not only air travel. Many Africans by road, thus. At one time I have spoken to a lady from BA. She said there are not so many extra incoming flights registered. A lot of charters though.

If one thinks that in normal situations flights in and out of SA are usually fully booked as the different flight operators protect their interests with aggression by veto-ing any new operator applications then it is clear the influx was not so excessive. SA is a popular tourist attraction. It is just that in this time the normal tourists were barred by the influx of soccer fans. Me thinks the greater tourist industry is in fact loosing money; fewer hunters came in, fewer safari tourists came in, and so on. Only in the big sentra are the hotels and B&B's booked solid, while at other areas people are loosing business.

Then it does not sound so much more, huh?!

I don't agree for one minute that SA will break even. Just take into account that Nelspruit don't have money for wages and the Development Bank is not so sure of giving them the huge loan they applied for.

Johannesburg is for all practical reasons bankrupt too. Pretoria does not have money to complete the stadium at Mamelodi. Some time ago Pretoria had serious cashflow problems. How can their situation have improved since? The Bulls, however, scored big time in this exercise whereas Loftus (Bull's ownership) was upgraded with rate payers' money.

During the bid in 2002(?) the budget was something like R2 billion for the upgrades. Now the expense is apparently +R41billion. Fifa ripped us off. They accepted our offer at that time and we should've only allowed escallation over these few years. But then, our government likes to shine without being able to look at the affordability! We as taxpayers will be paying for this shine for many years to come!

That is the opinion of an optimist

The pessimist say his glass is half empty

A glass is half full to one who intends to fill it up. :)
A glass is half empty to one who is intends to drain the contents. :(
