Day Minus 1

The time has come.

One night to go before we depart on our epic journey to Damaraland and Kaokoland in the Northern parts of Namibia. After many months of planning and meetings we are there, ready and starting to throw stones at the sun to set faster. Wondering if ever we will catch sleep tonight.
Seven bikes with Johann Strauss, Rika Minnie, Julian Lombard, Eddy Curry, Alex Currie, Stefan Oosthuizen and me, Johan Maree accompanied by our official back-up vehicle with our two Camp Commandants Trudie Maree and Marisabel in charge. Tagging along is Willie Duvenage and Cobus Erasmus in their Nissan, until we reach Popa Falls in the Caprivi where Andrew & Isolde Smith in a Colt and Piet & Lindi Roux in their Hilux at Ondangwa will fill in to complete the numbers.

Our general route

It will take long reading to go into too much detail regarding the planning. In short
- We had to undergo training in changing tyres as we will be travelling with Anakees to Ondangwa where we will change to nobblies for the next approx. 1500km of gravel, sand, rocks. Bavarian was wonderful in providing the specialist tuition in this regard

Eddy at the elbow grease end of the job

While we are looking on

- The club trailer that is originally built for black roads was modified extensively with 265/70x16 wheels, shotblast screen, stronger welds where required and general check-over.

Nice ground clearance

The shade net that will stop sand blasting to possible loaded bikes on the gravel roads

- The back-up Isuzu was fitted with a spare-wheel carrier on the rear bumper to carry additional spare wheels for itself and the trailer, roof carrier on the cab area, new tyres. 29MHz and other 2-way radios, two shower systems (one either side). The loading took a few hours (including the social!) and was done last Sunday. As the bikers will meet tomorrow at 6am the packing had to be done beforehand.

The loading took some time

While the ladies look on (Marisabel, Regina (Julian’s better half who is staying behind), Trudie and Rika

And of course does the trip have to be talked over AGAIN after the packing

- Apart from the usual 2-man tents, inflatable mattresses, food & camping stuff and two Wolf-boxes per bike we are also carrying
o 240L of potable water
o 270L petrol (for the bikes)
o 150L diesel for the Isuzu.
This being required as there is one stretch of +650Km with no facilities available and we have to be self-sufficient 100%

Heavily (but not over) loaded

This view shows the Wolf boxes, etc

Skygistics have provided a GPS tracking system that will continuously plot our progress and can be followed on a separate URL that will be posted on this thread tomorrow. Please take a look at times. It might just be interesting.

We will also endeavour to post short reports on a daily or more basis, wherever cell coverage is available.
I live to please, but don't always succeed

Waiting for our breakie in Potties. Not the Wimpy this time. The backup is doing fine and spirits touching sky! Will send a pic when we reach the Baobabs at Baltimore .
