Some of you may have heard the rumors that BMW is busy testing its water-cooled successor to the current boxer-twin range. It is only to be expected that a lot of these rumors result in questions to the Dealerships about the expected availability of these new machines. Cutting to the chase, and cutting out the middle man, herewith the formal response from BMW South Africa (thanks Roger!)
Dear all,
Based on new spy photos, international motorcycle media are carrying reports on a new BMW GS with opposed-twin engine and water cooling. These reports are now leading to increased enquiries on the part of media and customers relating to the market launch of a new GS.
BMW’s statement:
The successor generation or future GS generation is currently in the development phase and will not come out this year.
Points to note for your discussions with the media / customers:
The current R 1200 GS / GS Adventure has only been available since spring 2010, featuring the best "boxer" engine to date. In 2012 only the current R 1200 GS / R 1200 GS Adventure is available and in addition to the R 1200GS & R1200 GS Adv the R 1200 GS Rally is offered in 2012.
Regarding a successor of the current R 1200 GS BMW Motorrad will not respond to media speculation since it is still far too early for official statements to be made. It will be some time before a new model is launched. The next generation is still in the development phase.
Development work includes intense test riding with heavily disguised prototypes as seen in the press reports. Descriptions of product qualities as described in the reports only reflect the opinion of the writers concerned. At the appropriate time, BMW Motorrad will publish information on what a future GS generation looks like and what it is capable of.
Best regards,BMW (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd
